The PRTB candidate for Mayor of São Paulo, Pablo Marçal, avoided directly counter-attacking former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), after being blocked when he tried to get on the former captain’s sound car at the September 7 rally. The businessman cited the Bible to spare Bolsonaro from criticism, comparing their relationship with the biblical characters Saul and David.
The passage Marçal used to answer questions from his followers on Instagram is about the first kings of Israel, who had many differences but were “anointed.” “David needs to be patient for Saul’s reign to come to an end. As long as he has a chance, I will support him, because I know that it was God who raised him up,” he said.
On Sunday, the 8th, Bolsonaro released a statement accusing Marçal of trying to “make a platform at the expense of others”. In addition, the former president shared a message on Telegram saying that the businessman is a “traitor”, “a crook” and a “profiteer”. This is due to Marçal’s lack of a more contumacious stance against Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
In the posts, Marçal denies that he was prevented from getting on the sound truck by the former captain. According to him, the person who prevented him from getting on was pastor Silas Malafaia, the organizer of the demonstration. “If I had known this, I would have stayed in El Salvador. I learned a lot there about how to deal with criminals,” said the former coach.
In a series of posts (stories) on the social network, Marçal also emphasizes that he would not have done anything if he had gone up on the stage. During the event, a large part of the audience present wore caps with the letter “M” – the symbol of Marçal’s campaign, and even some of the candidates for the City Council of São Paulo explicitly supported him, such as Rubinho Nunes (União Brasil) and Daniel José (Podemos).
“It’s not about Pablo and Bolsonaro. It’s about the liberation and prosperity of a people,” posted the businessman, who has already criticized the son of former president Carlos Bolsonaro, when he accused him of being responsible for his father’s defeat to current president Lula (PT) in the 2022 general elections. However, they “understood each other” after interference from federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL).
Ricardo Nunes (MDB), the current mayor and official candidate of Bolsonaro and Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans) in the municipal race in São Paulo, participated timidly in the event. He did not speak at any time, nor was his name mentioned by the announcer on the sound truck. According to his press office, he even left before the former president’s speech.
According to a Datafolha survey, released last Thursday, the 5th, Marçal and Nunes are tied, both with 22% of voting intentions.
