1. How many people come to Ter Apel?
There are about 1200 per week and that number has been fairly constant since September. Anyone who arrives in our country and wants to apply for asylum must go to the Groningen village of Ter Apel, where the application center is located. There is room for up to 275 people. In the night from Tuesday to Wednesday, 750 people camped in the temporary tents on the site. They also slept in the offices of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) and the sports hall, said Mayor Jaap Velema van Westerwolde, which Ter Apel falls under.
Asylum seekers cannot or hardly move from the application center to the asylum seekers’ centers (AZCs). The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA), responsible for the reception, has 29,500 beds. They have all been occupied for some time now – including by asylum seekers who are allowed to stay in the Netherlands but for whom no house is available. As a result, COA had to move to barracks (for the reception of Afghan evacuees) and event halls for the reception.
