More than 22,185 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis killed; 57,035 inhabitants of the Gaza Strip and 5,431 of Israel were injured. Nearly 2 million internally displaced people in Gaza.
Three months after the outbreak of the war, the death toll and the humanitarian situation in the Strip are dramatic and they continue to get worse while the conflict increasingly risks spreading to the whole region.
After the brief truce there was a new escalation of violence with armed attacks by land and air. The UN resolutions for a ceasefire were rejected with abstentions and votes against. The United Nations General Assembly approved a resolution for a ceasefire for humanitarian reasons from which Italy abstained. The only resolution approved by the United Nations Security Council on December 22nd provided for the sending of humanitarian aid to Gaza but not the cessation of the fighting. The living conditions of the inhabitants of the Strip are catastrophic: Civilians cannot save themselves by fleeing from evacuated cities towards a border from which it is impossible to escape. Refugee camps are bombed.
The population does not have access to healthcare because healthcare facilities have been affected and there are no supplies of medicines and healthcare materials available.
Currently only thirteen out of thirty-six hospitals are partially functioning in the entire Strip, with inpatient departments 200% crowded.
The horror of October 7 in southern Israel at the hands of Hamas cannot justify the indiscriminate massacre of the Palestinian population by the Israeli army, which has been taking place in Gaza for more than 90 days. Added to this is the very harsh Israeli embargo on Gaza for over 16 years.
The declarations by the Israeli government of wanting to continue military operations until the complete destruction of Hamas are counterbalanced by the immense suffering of the Palestinian people.
We have asked for an appointment with the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani for the delivery of the signatures of the appeal for a permanent ceasefire and a political solution promoted by EMERGENCY, the Jewish anti-racist laboratory – LəA, Assopace Palestina e Mediterranea, signed by over 400 personalities from the academic and entertainment world, journalists, diplomats and many associations which reached 100 thousand subscriptions to ask for Italy's commitment to diplomatic action leading to a permanent ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages and the release of Palestinians held in administrative detention, the establishment of safe humanitarian corridors, the free entry of humanitarian aid and the restoration of international legality following the end of the occupation Israeli military.
