EH Bildu gathered thousands of people this afternoon in a new edition of the sovereignty demonstration, which this year had as its motto “Nazioa Gara” (We Are a Nation). The general coordinator of the Abertzale coalition has demanded to take a leap on the national terrain” and “make a path in the new status” for Euskal Herria.
The march, which was led by the Political Bureau of EH Bildu, took place entirely on Autonomía Street, a short route of about 700 meters between the squares of La Casilla and Zabalburu. The protesters, who carried numerous ikurriñas and flags of Navarra without the crown, carried out the route in silence, which was only broken by sporadic shouts of “independence”.
At the end of the march, Otegi made a speech in Basque and Spanish in which he asked to “take a leap on the national level and pave the way for a new status for the country.” “That path begins because everyone recognizes that Euskal Herria is a nation and must be respected, and from there, make a path,” he stated.
The Abertzale leader has asked his base to “fight every day” with “small gestures” against neoliberalism and contribute to making a country because “you cannot liberate a country or build an alternative society if we are not capable of imposing the country every day.” and the collective to the individual.”
Otegi has also highlighted the “numerous advances” that EH Bildu has achieved in recent years. Among them, the legal change has stood out so that the sentences served in France are counted against ETA prisoners or the agreements to modify the Gag Law.
He has placed special emphasis on those achieved in Navarra, such as the motion of censure agreed with the PSN to evict the right-wing UPN from the Pamplona City Council and invest Joseba Asiron (EH Bildu) again as mayor, or more recently, the signed with the socialists and Geroa Bai to re-signify the monument to the Fallen of the Navarrese capitalthe second largest Franco monument in Spain, to turn it into a place of memory that will bear the name of Maravillas Lamberto, the 14-year-old Navarrese girl who was raped and murdered in 1936 along with her father, a UGT militant, by Falangists and guards civilians.
“Those who wanted the monument that glorified the fascists will now have to see the eyes of Maravillas Lamberto, which are those of Euskal Herria, anti-fascist, nationalist and socialist. It is poetic justice,” he stressed.
Otegi closed his speech by inviting attendees to sing and dance “Sarri Sarri”, Kortatu’s song about the escape from Martutene prison of ETA prisoner and writer Joseba Sarrionandia, a topic that confronted Fermín Muguruza this week with the Basque Government for having recently sung it in that same San Sebastian prison, which the Minister of Justice, María Jesús San José, considered offensive to the victims of ETA.
Other left-wing sovereigntist formations also participated in the EH Bildu demonstration, represented by the general secretary of ERC, Marta Rovira; the head of international relations of the BNG, Rubén Cela; CUP members Susana Moreno, Berta Ramis and Carles Soler; and those of Compromis Verónica Ruiz, Carla Nebot and Vincent Marza; and Lluis Apesteguia for Mes Per Mallorca.
