The research commissioned by the Osteopaths Registry of Italy on a sample of 1,000 interviewees.
From the osteopath with word of mouth but also on the advice of a doctor
Almost 8 out of 10 Italians consider it a priority concludes the osteopathy regulatory process envisaged by Law 3/2018 and the compulsory training course in osteopathy certified by the state. 82% believe that osteopathic treatments must fall within the essential levels of assistance (Lea). This is what emerges from the research conducted by the Quorum / Youtrend institute for ROI – Register of Osteopaths of Italythe most representative and historic trade association in Italy, out of a sample of 1,000 representative cases of the Italian population. The results of the research were presented at the ROI 2022 Congress which takes place from 24 to 26 June in Naples. Now in its seventh edition, the Congress has focused on the development, research and identity of osteopathy in our country over the last thirty years.
Favorably evaluated osteopathy
According to the survey, 2 out of 3 respondents positively rate osteopathy. Among the reasons indicated by those who express a favorable opinion, 45% of the subsample believe that osteopathy allows to reduce the use of drugs in recurring problems such as muscle aches and that it is a useful health profession in the management of chronic pathologies. Although there is no gender difference in the positive assessment of osteopathy, it is mainly the graduated people to define themselves in favor of this discipline (79% of the answers).
44% of those who went to an osteopath or who accompanied their children there were advised by a family member or friend,
while 1 in 3 did it directly on the advice of a doctor: this result shows how osteopathy is an integrated discipline in a multidisciplinary approach with other health professions, also in the treatment of patients with chronicity. In fact, almost 2 out of 3 interviewees among those who go to the osteopath or accompany their children, declare that they did it for chronic problems (33%) o acute (32%).
A bumpy process
In September 2021 the Presidential Decree of 7 July 2021, n. 131 which recognizes the profession of osteopath: what has happened since then? “With the publication of the Presidential Decree in the Official Gazette, the law that recognizes osteopathy as a health profession has put the first important step, adopting the professional profile of the osteopath by decree. Thus the foundations of the osteopathic profession in Italy were laid. Now the osteopath has a professional identity sanctioned by a formal act with which the State recognizes the particular contribution of our discipline to the health of citizens. Now the hope is that the training path will be defined quickly to complete the process of defining the profession. We therefore ask the Minister of Mass that the MUR proceed quickly to the definition of the didactic organization in osteopathy to be able to address the issue of equivalences and conclude the process by the end of 2022, as established by decree “, replies Paola Sciomachen.
The current training process
At present, what is the training process required to become an osteopath? “In Italy there are currently numerous private training institutes spread throughout the territory for many years and which they present u
n 4 – 5 year course of study including clinical internship. How many osteopaths are there in Italy, between official and unofficial numbers? “The document” Regulation of the Osteopathic Profession in Europe “drawn up by EFFO – European Federation For Osteopathy estimates that there are 12 thousand Italian osteopaths. Of these, the members of the ROI – Registry of Osteopaths of Italy are over 4,500. The figure is naturally on the rise because osteopathic schools welcome an ever-increasing number of new students and every year over 600 students complete their studies ».
Collaboration between health professions is fundamental
How are the relationships with other health professionals? «We have always believed that the collaboration between the various health professionals is fundamental to guarantee patients the most adequate and complete response to their health needs. The professional profile adopted by the decree defined the skills and role of the osteopathic professional e this will allow each profession to have its own field of activity and we are sure that, as already happens, everyone will have their own space for the benefit of all and above all of the citizens ”, he concludes.
