The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) will send a group of experts to Armenia to assess the situation in a number of border regions. This is stated on October 19 at website organizations.
The trip of specialists is scheduled for October 21-27 and will take place at the invitation of Yerevan.
“The purpose of the team’s visit is to assess the situation in some border areas in accordance with the mandate and experience of the OSCE and within the framework of its comprehensive security concept,” the statement said.
The technical group will include international experts and representatives of the OSCE secretariat. They will visit areas along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and consult with local stakeholders as well as international partners on the ground.
On October 18, Armenia applied to the OSCE to send observers from the organization to the border with Azerbaijan. It is important for Yerevan to understand the position of the organization on the situation, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan noted.
On October 17, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to assist the EU civilian mission along the joint border. The work of the European mission will begin in October.
On October 12, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced his readiness to contribute to the implementation of the trilateral agreements between Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia. The Russian Federation is open to discussing the adoption of additional measures, the minister stressed.
On October 4, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the United States discussed the development of a peace agreement between Yerevan and Baku. The foreign ministers of the countries agreed to continue discussions aimed at establishing stability and security in the South Caucasus.
Relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are regularly aggravated against the backdrop of disputing the ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh, which in 1988 announced its secession from the Azerbaijan SSR. During the military conflict of 1992-1994, Baku lost control over Karabakh.
In September 2020, Baku took control of a number of settlements during military operations. In November of the same year, the parties, with the participation of Moscow, signed an agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh. The last time the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border escalated in September 2022, Yerevan and Baku reported deaths on each side and exchanged mutual accusations of escalation.
