The young man reacted to the after-effects of the serious road accident that forced him to become disabled since 2014: he is now an engineer and a great athlete
Albisola – Matteo Orsi flies to Japan. There is no obstacle to the rebirth of the young table tennis ace, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in May 2014, when he was only 16 years old. After finding again the strength to move with the wheelchair, Orsi had graduated, then plunged into engineering studies and table tennis, and now he has won a ticket for the Paralympics in Tokyo. The call was expected, after seasons in which the Albisolo, registered for the Savona Table Tennis, was projected to the top to national rankings winning tournaments and championships repeatedly.
“It seems incredible to me – commented Orsi – But in the end I did it. Qualification for the Paralympics it is a long-dreamed result. Indeed, it is not a goal, but the starting point for a new adventure. I am really happy that all the work done so far has paid off. I can only thank all the people who in recent years have always believed in my possibilities, encouraging me and giving me security that I could do it “.
The albisolese will be the standard bearer of the Paralympic national table tennis team, to the delight of the president of Table Tennis Savona, Maurizio Nazari, who was the first to understand the potential of Matteo Orsi. From 24 August to 5 September it will be on stage in Japanese sports halls, on the hunt for Olympic medals.
The party exploded in Albisola. Hundreds of friends and fans who will follow him via the web crossing their fingers. Exactly as they have done so far, following Matteo in winning three consecutive league titles, the last in Verona in 2019 in Italian Paralympic Championships in teams of class 1-5. Just two years ago Orsi had risen to 21st place in the world ranking, suddenly climbing seven positions. And from there he began to trace the path, considering that participation in the Paralympics was open to the first 18 athletes of the world ranking, as well as two others selected through wild cards. Then came the lockdown: “Together with other guys from the National team we tried to get by, organizing ourselves to do physical training at home, even via video call to work together and develop strength and endurance”. –
