The Independent reported that people who have had lung transplants at Birmingham University hospitals face a higher risk of death than other hospitals.
She stated that the survival rate 5 years after the operation is less by 20% compared to other hospitals that specialize in lung transplants.
And figures from the National Health Service in Britain revealed that the 5-year survival rate after the operation decreased from 79 percent in 2015-2016 to only about 31 percent in 2020-2021.
The hospital was consistently the lowest compared to four other hospitals in Britain.
And Birmingham University Hospitals recorded the lowest patient survival rate, with one dying just 90 days after surgery.
A group of experts had expressed their concerns about organ transplants in these hospitals, earlier this year, noting a “critical” situation due to the severe shortage of medical staff inside the intensive care units.
For example, the Endowment Advisory Group said to meeting minutes that 10 lung transplant patients had to be transferred to another location.
And she talked about a re-evaluation of lung transplants in these hospitals.
