The Hungarian presidency of the European Council will have European migration policies in its sights and will bet on the solution proposed by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who wants to build migrant detention centers in Albania. «We have to build detention centers outside the European Union (EU). This is the only solution, the rest are an illusion. Because irregular migrants, once they enter Europe, it is impossible to kick them out,” Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán defended this Wednesday before the plenary session of the European Parliament.
In a speech, acclaimed by his Patriots for Europe group – of which Le Pen and Vox’s party, among others, are also part and in which he has not mentioned the war in Ukraine even once – the Hungarian leader has focused on the EU’s “failed migration policies.” “The European asylum system simply does not work and, therefore, some countries have established controls at their borders and want to get out of these policies,” he highlighted in reference to Germany’s recent request to abandon this system. For Orbán, the solution is to “give support” to countries that have an external border to prevent irregular arrivals. “The increase in irregular migration leads to anti-Semitism, an increase in homophobia and violence against women,” he stressed.
In her response, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, highlighted that migration is a common challenge that requires a common response and criticized Budapest for acting on its own in this regard. «How is it possible that Hungary facilitates entry for Russian nationals without additional controls? “These practices put all Member States at risk.” For their part, the group of social democrats and their leader, Iratxe García, have criticized Orbán for talking about homophobia and gender violence “when in his country he repeals the laws that protect women and the LGTBI community.”
The leader of the European Popular Party, Manfred Weber, has also had harsh words for the Hungarian leader, whom he has disgraced for not mentioning even once in his speech to Ukraine and has harshly criticized the Hungarian leader’s visit to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin. «His plan has never been a peace mission, but one of propaganda. During Hungary’s previous EU presidency in 2011, he met with all European leaders. Today no one wants to meet with you, you are misaligned with European policies,” Weber stressed.
And Von der Leyen herself has marked Ukraine as one of the priorities of the next mandate of the European Commission. «There are still those who blame the invaded and not the invader. There is only one path to just peace and there will not be one if there is submission, just as sovereignty and occupation are not synonymous,” the German launched, in a clear reference to Hungary’s attitude of taking a stand against European measures against Moscow. in retaliation for the war in Ukraine. Although the country establishes the agenda of the European Council from July to December, this will not affect the political agenda and “the EU will be with Ukraine as long as necessary,” Von der Leyen has promised.
