The anniversary of the anti-Soviet revolution of 1956 has served as an excuse to the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbánto take another step in its confrontation with the EU authorities. After paying tribute to the heroes of the revolution and drawing several parallels with the recent fight against the Danube floods, he focused the speech with which he inaugurated the commemorative events in Budapest on the European Union, which he accuses of trying to overthrow his government to install a puppet regime in the country. “That is why they announced in Brussels that they would get rid of Hungary’s national government,” Orbán argued before a crowd, “and they also announced that they wanted to hang a puppet government from Brussels around the country’s neck.”
Orbán has further stated that the EU plans to allow Ukrainian soldiers to be stationed in Hungary after a future victory. “We Hungarians would wake up one morning and find that slavic soldiers “East were once again stationed on the territory of Hungary,” he said, and accused Brussels of forcing the entire bloc to participate in Russia’s war in Ukraine against the will of the European peoples. «Should we give in to the will of a foreign power, this time from Brussels, or should we resist? That is the serious decision Hungary now faces. “I propose that our response be as clear and unequivocal as in 1956,” he called on Hungarians to resist their European partners, in the same way that Hungarians then resisted the Soviet empire.
“Although the heroes of 1956 did not manage to triumph, victims of bloody repression by the Soviet Union, today we will win,” he harangued the population, “we know that they want to force us to enter the war, we know that they want to impose their immigrants, we know that they want to hand our children over to gender ideologues,” he continued with his diatribe, concluding that “the lesson for us is that we must fight for one thing: Hungary and Hungarian freedom. Therefore, the best we can do now is not participate in other people’s wars».
Orbán has also dedicated part of his speech to lashing out at Péter Magyar and the Tisza party, the Hungarian opposition, which according to a recent survey are already ahead of the Fidesz among voters. «They already have the game that they want to put around our necks. They also have their man, a real designer guy,” he said, without expressly mentioning either Péter Magyar or the Tisza Party, “anyone who is a patriot is fighting for the freedom of Hungary today, only someone who is not a patriot is dedicated today to make a hole in the middle of the flag. Only actions matter. And the actions speak for themselves. «Old opposition, new opposition, only the label changes. In 1956 they were leaders of Muska, today they are leaders of Brussels,” he mocked, “this is not a conspiracy theory, it is a conspiracy in practice.” And he has encouraged the Hungarian people to take the side of David, with whom he identifies, in the supposed duel against Goliath, which for him is the EU.
Starting at three in the afternoon, in another of the commemorative events, Peter Magyar For his part, he participated in a demonstration that started from Hay Square, in front of the statue of József Bem. International guest speakers included Portuguese green Rui Tavares and the Polish MEP Michał Wawrykiewicz, from Civic Platform, whom the former Polish Minister of Justice has compared to Hitler’s propagandists and who, in his speech, celebrated that “it is pleasant to see and hear the freedom that can be felt in the air in this square. He was referring to the rally called by the opposition against the “dictator”, whom in his opinion Tisza will displace at the polls in 2026.
Behind a banner that read “In 1956, the Hungarians were not afraid” and in front of a massive attendance, he claimed 1956 as common history. He thanked those present for not being afraid to defend a free, independent, European and well-being Hungary for which the people have fought shoulder to shoulder for 68 years and congratulated himself for seeing that many people have a moral compass in action, « that shows what national decency and true patriotism mean. He drew applause by stating that “Hungary is not for sale, it cannot be exchanged for anything. It is sacrosanct,” in a veiled reference to the agreements that Orbán is plotting with Putin. “This is what every political leader and every foreign minister should have in their head.” “There are still cowards,” the National Anthem quoted, “who betray our country for thirty dollars and who live among us and are in a position of control.”
