11-year-old girl, rape victim, was prevented from having a legal abortion in Santa Catarina, according to The Intercept
Opposition congressmen spoke out this Monday (June 20, 2022) on the case of an 11-year-old girl prevented from having a legal abortion after being a victim of rape. According to a report by The Interceptthe Justice of Santa Catarina decided to keep the child in a shelter to prevent her from having the procedure.
In an order obtained by the report, judge Joana Ribeiro Zimmer, holder of the District of Tijucas, states that the visit to the shelter was determined to protect the child from the aggressor, but that there was also another reason. “The risk is that the mother performs some procedure to operate on the death of the baby”.
The report features a video of a court hearing held last month. In the images, the judge suggests that the child continue with the pregnancy, even though she says she is not interested. “Would you like to stay with the baby a little longer?”he asks, offering her to stay “two or three more weeks”, until the complete formation of the fetus.
The case reverberated in the political environment. Opponents criticized Judge Joana Ribeiro for “induce” the child to give up the abortion. Some claimed that the decision has the “finger” of the former Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights Damares Alves (Republicans). Others remembered the 2020 episode, of the 10-year-old child from Espírito Santo, a rape victim, who had a legal abortion.
