Opportunity for a Europe that is not, nor will be, prepared

Trump’s resounding victory could, should, be an opportunity for Europe, the EU, to react by seeking more economic dynamism, more civil and military strategic autonomy. It doesn’t seem like he’s going to get it. It is divided and European politics – to 27 and in each of its Member States – after this victory will tend to normalize its extreme right even more. From France, Macron was yesterday one of the first European leaders to congratulate Trump, calling for “a more united, stronger Europe.” Do you believe it? It would be necessary in a world in which uncertainty grows, and in which democracy falters and generates results of this type. It will be difficult or impossible. Unless Trump forces it, despite himself.

Trump, always unpredictable, perhaps less so this time, arrives stronger than before, with a clear victory and with the experience of a first term, although he will soon realize that the world has changed. The US and the West rule less. The next president will have a relatively easy time fulfilling one of his promises on the international stage: ending the war in Ukraine. It is enough to turn off the tap on military aid to kyiv, even if it is aid that the military-industrial complex takes advantage of, today rather the so-called Deep Stateto whom it will compensate, and convince Putin of a pact that leaves the invaded country outside of NATO, which is Moscow’s central objective. Once again, after Afghanistan, after Iraq, the Europeans who have been supporting kyiv may be left in a very uncomfortable and divided position. In any case, there was, there is, no unity on the matter either. Even Olaf Scholz now wants to present himself as “chancellor of peace.” Furthermore, pro-Russian Europeans are also pro-Trump. And against China? Will Europe know how to maintain autonomy? It will be a decisive question, but it remains to be seen. Today, Europe continues to need the United States in many things, from technology to defense, including American cultural dominance and energy. And there is a reason why Netanyahu has applauded Trump’s victory so much, despite Biden’s unconditional and indispensable support for Israel and its ongoing wars in the Middle East.
