Ecuador’s National Assembly saved the country’s president, Guillermo Lasso, from being impeached on Tuesday night (28).
Last week, a group of parliamentarians linked to former president Rafael Correa and a sector of the Pachakutik movement, the political arm of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conaie), the main organizer of the protests that have been taking place in the country since the last day 13, had activated the process, alleging “political crisis and internal commotion” due to the wave of demonstrations against the high cost of living and the government’s economic policies.
After three days of debate, 80 of the 137 national parliamentarians voted in favor of impeaching Lasso, but 92 votes were needed for the president to be removed from office.
Before the vote, Lasso had accused Correa’s allies “of attacking democracy, of taking advantage of the chaos to destroy institutionality in Ecuador,” in a video message posted on social media.
