Samsung’s foldable phone production tripled in 2021, according to a firm report Display Supply Chain Consultants. Over the past three years, the manufacturer has released several phones that can be folded in half and unfolded again and again. But there is more and more competition. EL PAÍS has had a first contact with the Oppo Find N, a terminal that is quite reminiscent of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and aspires to stand up to Samsung’s most powerful foldable.
Oppo was the fourth manufacturer that sold the most phones in the last quarter of 2021, according to market analysis brand Canalys. The main drawback of its first folding mobile is that it can only be purchased in China. The company has not yet announced when the terminal will reach the European market or, if it does, how much it will cost. In the Asian country, its price starts at 7,699 yuan. That is, about 1,070 euros. The model that this newspaper has tested has a software designed for China. Therefore, some basic Android features are limited and some apps are not optimized for the home screen. This, according to the company, will not happen if the terminal reaches the European market.
When the Oppo Find N is folded, it has a less elongated and more square design than the Galaxy Fold. Its external panel, 5.49 inches, is designed to be used with one hand, although it is more comfortable to control it with both. On a day-to-day basis, the mobile is a bit thick and heavy (275 grams). Its back has an elegant matte finish in which fingerprints are practically not marked when using it. In it, a very well integrated rectangular camera module stands out thanks to slight curvatures on its sides.
One of the strong points of the Oppo terminal compared to the Samsung folding ones is that when it is closed, the two sides of the phone close perfectly. That is, there is no space between them, which makes it difficult for dust or other substances to sneak through the middle and damage the screen. The mobile, which is quite robust, can be opened like a book to make way for a large 7.1-inch screen. If you drag your finger across the panel, the indentation that folding phones usually have is hardly noticeable and is practically invisible to the naked eye. The manufacturer promises that the hinge can withstand more than 200,000 closures. Or what is the same, more than 100 closures a day for five years.
While the secondary screen has a refresh rate of 60 Hz, the main one reaches 120 Hz. This parameter refers to the number of times the screen is updated per second. So the higher it is, the smoother the experience and the smoother the transitions between different apps. Although more battery is also required. In the case of the Z Fold 3, both screens reach 120 Hz. Other manufacturers also opt for different refresh rates on their screens. For example, the internal screen of the Honor Magic V has a refresh rate of 90 Hz while that of the external panel reaches 120 Hz.
A multipurpose device
The objective of the Chinese brand is that the Oppo Find N is the mobile, the tablet and the computer, but in a single device. Although this goal is still a long way off, the terminal has several interesting functions. Using it unfolded is similar to using a small tablet. The experience when viewing multimedia content and playing games on its large screen is very positive. Its dimensions also allow you to use several applications at the same time. For example, it is possible to display a video on one side of the panel while doing a Google search on the other.
As with Samsung’s foldables, the Oppo Find N’s hinge can stay open at any angle. This allows the phone to be used as a laptop or as an L-shaped device. This option can be useful for taking photos or recording videos without a tripod or for hands-free video calls.
The Find N incorporates five cameras in total. Three of them are in the rear module: a 50-megapixel main lens, a 16-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, and a 13-megapixel telephoto lens with two-times optical zoom. In addition, it has two front cameras – one on each screen – of 32 megapixels each. In this case, both sensors are visible, unlike the camera on the front screen of the Galazy Fold 3, which is somewhat camouflaged with pixels on the lens.
The user can also take selfies with the rear cameras and preview them on the secondary screen of the mobile. In the photographic section, in general, a good level of detail and a good dynamic range are achieved in conditions with good light. When there is not much light, although the results are also positive, the sensors suffer a little more. Especially pictures taken with the wide angle feature quite a bit of noise.
The terminal is compatible with 5G and is full of power thanks to one of Qualcomm’s most powerful processors, the Snapdragon 888. In addition, it is available in two models: one with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage and another with 12GB of memory RAM and 512GB of storage. In the tests carried out, no lag or delay when running different applications. The terminal has a 4,500 mAh battery and a 33W fast charge that, in theory, can charge the terminal to 55% in 30 minutes and 100% in 70 minutes.
