A 52-year-old man comes to my office with symptoms consistent with type 2 diabetes mellitus. I say that the blood results indicate diabetes. “Oh, luckily, no illness,” he says. I explain that he has diabetes: because of too much sugar in his blood he is probably also terribly thirsty? “Yes, I drink two liters of cola in the evening, so thirsty!” I tell him that he should stop with that right away, because it really is a lot of sugar. He looks at me with relief and says: “Gosh, I was afraid you would tell me to stop smoking.”
