LONDON (Reuters) – One person was killed and another injured in a vehicle explosion outside the Women’s Hospital in Liverpool, northern England, on Sunday, police said, adding counterterrorism authorities are leading the investigation.
Merseyside police said in a statement that they understand the car involved was a taxi that had stopped at a hospital shortly before the explosion took place.
Police chief Serena Kennedy said officers were called after reports of a car explosion shortly before 8 am EDT on Sunday.
“We are still working to establish what happened,” she told reporters.
“We are open-minded about what caused the explosion, but given how it happened, out of caution, the Counterterrorism Police are leading the investigation with support from the Merseyside Police.”
Police said the explosion was not declared a terrorism incident at this time.
