Over the years, it was owned by different rulers and had numerous uses. The first of its functions and the reason for its construction was border protection with the old Hungarian feudal state.
As time went by, in the second part of the 15th century, the castle began to lose quality and deteriorate, which is why its owner at the time, Štefan Zápoľský, was in charge of completely restoring the building. The Hungarian noble aristocrat turned the place into a palace dedicated to being a stately residence with a knight’s room and a chapel dedicated to Saint Elizabeth. Ján was born there, son of the nobleman who remodeled the castle, who years later would become the King of Hungary.
