In the midst of the intensive preparations made by the Sudanese street to launch Thursday’s march to demand civilian rule and the removal of the army from politics, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Volker Peretz, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and head of the “UNITAMS” mission concerned with supporting the political transition in Sudan, citing “the government’s dissatisfaction and dissatisfaction.” towards the media statements issued by him, in which he demanded not to use excessive violence against the protesters.
However, a spokesman for UNITAMS confirmed earlier to “Sky News Arabia” that “the protection of civilians is one of the most important tasks entrusted to the mission in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2524 adopted in June 2020,” stressing the mission’s commitment to supporting the civilian transformation process.
The European Union envoy for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber, held meetings with officials in the Sovereignty Council and the Revolutionary Forces, to advance the faltering political process, in light of the lack of clarity on any results of the efforts made by the tripartite mechanism consisting of the United Nations, the African Union and the IGAD group, or the one led by the joint Saudi-American mediation. .
The official spokesman for the UN mission in Khartoum, Fadi El-Qadi, said that “the mission welcomes all international efforts aimed at resolving the crisis.”
