According to Cuba’s official news agency, the 36-year-old man was killed while participating in “riots” in Guinera, a suburb of the capital Havana. The Interior Ministry “regrets the death,” the statement said.
On Sunday, unprecedented demonstrations broke out in Cuba against the regime, which has been in power since the 1950s. The dissatisfaction among the protesters is partly fueled by the economic crisis and the increase in the number of corona infections in the country.
Sunday’s demonstrations spilled over into Monday and Tuesday, leading to both arrests and allegations of police brutality. Videos of the demonstrations show how men, who opponents of the government say are plainclothes agents, beat demonstrators.
