I have always been passionate about motorcycles and when I was a kid, and that has already rained on, for me the world was divided into two groups, the Montesistas and the Bultaquistas. I was a mountaineer. And I still am, so when due to the pandemic I could not attend the invitation to visit the exhibition of the ’75 years of Montesa ‘, I felt that I had missed something important, something worth seeing that was listed on the agenda of pending things.
But fortune sometimes works for one and a few months later the opportunity arose in the form of an unexpected trip to the Catalan lands with a visit to the Bassella Motorcycle Museum, and not a normal visit, but we would have the privilege that the commissioners of the exhibition, Santi Ruiz and Pep Itchart and the owner of the museum D. Estanis Soler, will guide us on the visit. If you like motorcycles, be sure to visit this museum, it is wonderful.
The day began at the Montesa-Honda factory where I would pick up what would be my travel companion, a brand new and imposing 2021 Honda Gold Wing. A motorcycle designed to travel, a sofa with wheels, a rolling luxury. Six cylinders, 1800 cm3, 125 hp, electronic suspensions, music, GPS, reverse gear, adjustable screen, cruise control, DCT gearbox… I could also have it for a few days so I would also take it on a trip to Madrid.
After the rigorous explanations, there are many buttons to handle, we leave from Santa Perpetua de Mogoda. The route would not be direct, but we would cross the Moianés region to reach the museum almost at lunchtime. Of course we had already made a ‘technical’ stop to have lunch a succulent sausage with ‘tumaca’ bread that would fill us with energy to make the corpulent Goldwind dance between so much curve. After the complete visit we would eat at the Can Boix de Peramola restaurant, good food and better after-dinner. With the sun setting, we returned to Barcelona with a stretch of highway to lighten the journey.
The next day he would leave for Madrid, almost 700 km ahead in which he would look for good roads to enjoy the motorcycle. My plan was to get away from the city as soon as possible, so by 8 in the morning I was already underway. It would go down to Tarragona, Reus and then towards Alcañiz by the route of the Drums, to Caminreal, Monreal del Campo and passing through Molina de Aragón, it would take the A2 in Alcolea del Pinar. The day was perfect for riding a motorcycle, 25 or 26 degrees maximum; What a difference with the last trip through this area at several degrees below zero and snowing heavily!
The truth is that, before leaving I thought that the solo trip would be heavy and monotonous, but it turned out the opposite. The Gold Wind is a machine to eat kilometers and choosing suitable roads is enjoyed to the fullest. The engine purrs like a cat, the suspensions filter everything smoothly and nothing can resist its 125 hp. Except in urban areas, where I let the DCT do it, I had fun playing with the paddles to keep the engine in the maximum torque zone, where the accelerations are lightning despite the volume of the bike. Almost without realizing it, I was leaving Guadalajara behind, arriving in Madrid at siesta time and with a big smile on my face, this unexpected trip had really been a joy.
