The mayor of a city in southern Ecuador was shot dead on Wednesday (17), four days before the country's population went to the polls to vote in a referendum proposed by President Daniel Noboa's government to mainly change national security legislation. .

José Sánchez, 52 years old and mayor of Camilo Ponce Enríquez, a city located in the province of Azuay, was killed along with two other people, according to local press.

Camilo Ponce Enríquez City Hall released a statement that pointed out that, “in an act of violence, one of those that the country is going through these days, the mayor was shot and as a result he lost his life.”

It was the second murder of a mayor in Ecuador in less than a month. On March 24, 27-year-old Brigitte García, mayor of the city of San Vicente, in the province of Manabí, was also executed.

Faced with the security crisis in Ecuador, President Daniel Noboa called for next Sunday (21) a referendum in which the population will decide on 11 changes in legislation.

Most of the proposals are related to public security, such as allowing additional support from the Armed Forces in the functions of the National Police to combat organized crime and the extradition of Ecuadorians to be prosecuted in other countries.
