On Corriere Salute: the right treatment for multiple sclerosis

The right treatment from the moment of diagnosis: for those suffering from multiple sclerosis it is no longer impossible and also the way to avoid the appearance of disabilities. It already happens today thanks to an arsenal of drugs that continues to enrich itself, perhaps even more in the future if it is possible to apply the discovery of researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, which on Science Advances reported that they have identified four additional proteins against which the autoimmune response underlying multiple sclerosis is triggered that add to the other known targets of the disease and which could become additional targets for drugs, for ever greater personalization of care.

They are important to better understand the pathology and they may perhaps indicate new intervention strategies, however the practical application is still far away, comments Roberto Furlan, director of the Institute of Experimental Neurology of the Irccs San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. Individualizing the treatment is fundamental and possible already today, thanks to the many treatments available (now about twenty molecules) so the first advice to patients for setting up the therapy is to a highly specialized center, with expert doctors, able to decide on the most suitable active ingredient for each individual case from the time of diagnosis. Many patients by now do not manage to develop disabilities.
