videoThe number of infections and hospital admissions is rising rapidly. The OMT spoke at length this morning about the latest corona wave. If there is no tilt in the figures next week, additional measures may threaten. The ball is in the cabinet. “It doesn’t look good.”

It Outbreak Management Team met to discuss the current epidemiological situation and the effectiveness of the proposed 1, 2 and 3G plans. With infection numbers that are through the roof and hospitals that have to take into account six hundred to seven hundred corona patients in the IC at the peak, it seems alarm phase one.
“The most important advice last week was: reduce the number of contacts, preferably by 20 to 25 percent,” a member of the OMT told this news site. The cabinet chose to lock shops and catering in the evenings and to reintroduce the home working advice. The first data on mobility and behavior show something of a decline, but this OMT member does not find it very convincing yet. “Whether stricter measures are then needed is up to the politicians. Boosting faster does help.”
Another OMT member states that the figures look bad, but that ‘everything stands or falls with next week’. It must then become clear to what extent people actually reduce their contacts, which should then be reflected in the infections and later in the hospital admission.

Insiders at the Binnenhof report that no Catshuis session or press conference is planned for the time being. “You want to see a plateau,” says an insider. “If the numbers continue to rise for days, it is not a good sign. You have about 1350 IC beds as a maximum, you want to stay away from that.” Another source reports: “You are now only at one week, the idea is that you need two weeks to see the effect of measures.”
According to calculations by the bed planners at the LCPS, hospitals will have to take into account almost seven hundred Covid patients in intensive care and more than 2600 in nursing wards in two weeks.
That is why hospitals must have 1150 IC places ready on Monday, writes De Volkskrant Friday, in the worst case scenario, there should be 1350, although there is a threat of ‘code black’, the moment that there are too few beds to help everyone.
Code black
After the Council of Ministers, outgoing Minister of Health Hugo de Jonge (CDA) discussed the current situation. He emphasized that everyone must adhere to the ‘ground rules’ and that it is busy in the hospitals.
But it is not yet code black, he wanted to emphasize: ,,It sounds threatening, but we are not there now. We have less than a thousand patients on IC, 420 of whom with Covid. I share the concern, but we also need to put the matter into perspective. Nevertheless, it is up to all of us to ensure that we do not end up in that scenario.”
The Dutch Healthcare Authority reported yesterday that twelve hospitals have now failed to provide ‘critically plannable care’ within six weeks, compared to nine a week earlier. This care must be provided in the short term because otherwise greater medical problems threaten. Think of a patient who has been diagnosed with colon cancer and who needs surgery.
