The omicron variant has been the dominant variant of covid-19 since the end of last year. Here in Brazil, she is responsible for a new wave of the disease that is recording an average of 847 deaths per day and more than 127 thousand cases.

The member of the Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases Hélio Bacha explained that since its detection in South Africa at the end of November 2021, one of the characteristics of the variant is that it does not accept the lung. This is manifested by the main symptoms of the omicron which is a sore throat and nasal congestion.
“The virus showed a lot of difference not only from a microbiological point of view but also from a clinical and epidemiological representation. It was much more transmissible than Delta and Gamma, their incubation period was different, but lung involvement is rare,” he explained. Bacha also reinforced the importance of a complete three-dose vaccination cycle for all adults to reduce deaths.
Omicron rises fast and falls fast
Previous variants of the coronavirus usually had a spike in cases and deaths that lasted for many months, the so-called plateau.
In the case of the Ômicron, the pediatrician, infectologist and consultant of the Extraordinary Committee for Monitoring Covid of the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) Renato Kfouri explained that in much of the world the Ômicron behaved with a strong increase in cases and a sudden drop soon after.
“Mortality takes a little longer to drop. You increase the number of cases, after 15 days the hospitalizations, after another 15 days the number of deaths, and the fall comes in the opposite direction, the number of cases drops, after hospitalization and, finally, the number of deaths” , he said.
These numbers are already noticeable in some parts of the country. The moving average of cases and death in Brazil by the omicron is already in decline this Tuesday (15th) was the lowest since January 21st.
There is no evidence of larger cases of long-term covid
Several studies since the beginning of the pandemic have warned of the presence of the so-called long covid, when symptoms and sequelae such as loss of taste and smell, fatigue, anxiety and sleeping problems lasted up to two months in those who had contracted the disease.
According to Kfouri, there is no evidence that contamination by any of the variants can cause a greater or lesser number of long-term covid in patients.
“Regardless of the variant, the long covid is related to the number of cases. The more cases, the greater the number of people who will have persistent symptoms,” he commented.
