Omicron, only 6.6% of the population fully vaccinated in Africa
Perhaps it is no coincidence that the new variant of Covid-19, which potentially could be the most dangerous, comes from Africa. And the West also plays a role, given the substantial lack of interest in the distribution of vaccines to developing countries and regions with less resources such as southern Africa for a long time. Today only 6.6% of the African population has been fully immunized against the coronavirus pandemic. Data released a few days ago by the Centers for Disease control and Prevention continental, a few days or even hours after the identification of the new Omicron variant that has caused and is causing fears and closures all over the world.
Let’s start with the data. The doses administered across the continent were 221.7 million, equal to 55.01% of the doses provided. It is therefore clear that only a little more than one in two doses was actually administered at the time. Partially vaccinated 9.89% of the population. As is known, South Africa is the first origin of Omicron, at least as far as is known. At the moment, however, 24,874,528 doses have been inoculated in the country, with 23.66% of the population being fully immunized. Therefore much wider average than the continental one.
Covid, how many problems for the vaccination campaign in Africa
Many countries have not even managed to receive doses. A little because of the scarcity of their resources, a little because of the disinterest of the more advanced world. Myopic approach that now risks turning around like a boomerang. Asking for a more equitable and broader distribution is not a feel-good thought, but simply a forward-looking position. Helping the world, including Africa, to proceed on the same wavelength and at the same speed would allow us to keep the pandemic and its new mutations under control. That won’t stop with Omicron.
Omicron, Africa angry with the West for closures
Africa complains a lot about the reaction of Western countries to the news of the Omicron variant. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa deplored travel restrictions imposed on some Southern African countries in response to the Omicron variant and called for “unwarranted and unscientifically” travel restrictions that are “hurting economies”. and travel-related sectors, “denouncing a decision contrary to the commitments made by the G20 nations last month. In fact, the Rome declaration, signed by 20 world leaders, first of all sanctions, in point 2, to “further strengthen our common response to the pandemic”, convinced of the “crucial role of multilateralism in the search for shared and effective solutions”. Specifically, with regard to international travel, point 39 of the Rome declaration decreed “the restart in a safe and orderly manner, in line with the work of the competent international organizations”. While taking into account national public health policies, the G20 recognized “the importance of shared standards to ensure uninterrupted travel”.
China delivers one billion vaccines and relaunches ties with Africa
Same position expressed by the governments of the other southern African countries. And Xi Jinping rejoices, who promises to send one billion new doses of anti-Covid vaccines to African countries at the three-year bilateral China-Africa forum. This is a widely anticipated initiative that supplements the 200 million serums previously provided (in minimal part free). China Files pledges to provide African financial institutions with a $ 10 billion line of credit for small and medium-sized enterprises, establishing a joint platform to promote private investment and inviting Chinese companies, Xi said. to divert a similar or at least no less figure to the continent over the next three years.
Thanks to the stammering and myopia of the West in the face of Omicron and above all in relation to the distribution of vaccines, China can thus be able to relaunch its image as a responsible actor worldwide. It is no coincidence that Joe Biden immediately spoke of the need to increase the redistribution of vaccines also in Africa, immediately after Xi’s announcement. But in Africa they still remember Trump’s “sh *** le countries”, while in Beijing all leaders are always treated with gloves. Covid and now Omicron could strengthen the link between China and Africa.
