Santiago Arcila reached a historic round of 16 in the individual archery event after beating Pit Klein (Luxembourg) 6-4 and Dan Olaru (Moldova) 6-2 on the morning of Thursday, August 1, on the Esplanade des Invalides within the framework of Paris 2024.
The Colombian’s first start was at 9:48 in the morning (in our country), although Pit Klein started strongly by scoring a triple 10 and winning the first set 26-30, the Colombian was entering the match by tying the second by 27-27 and surpassing the next three with 26-23, 29-27 and tying the last one at 28 points. The final score of 6-4, gave Santiago the pass to the round of 16.
His second match of the day was against the Moldovan Dan Olaru. Once again, Arcila started losing after 26 – 29, however, the next three sets were in his favor with scores of 27 – 24, 28 – 26 and 28 – 25, thus, the score ended 6 – 2 in favor of the Colombian and with the historic ticket to the round of 16.
On Thursday, other Colombians also participated in the discipline. In the early hours of the morning in Colombia, Jorge Enríquez defeated the representative of Kazakhstan, Dauletkeldi Zhangbyrbay, with a score of 7-3, and became the first Colombian archer to reach the round of 16 at the Olympic Games.
However, in that instance, the Mexican Matías Grande defeated and eliminated Enríquez by 6 – 2 and after the results of 29 – 28, 28 – 28, 27 – 27 and the final 30 – 28.
Likewise, the only female representative in the discipline, Ana María Rendón, faced Taiwanese Chien-Ying Lei at 5:32 in the morning in our country. The Colombian was eliminated in the round of 32, after a global score of 7 – 1 with results of 28 – 26, 27 – 27, 29 – 27 and 28 – 26.
In this way, Colombian archery will continue in Paris 2024 with the debut in the mixed team modality this Friday, August 2. The Colombian team, made up of Ana María Rendón and Santiago Arcila, will face the representatives of Germany from 4:43 in the morning in our country. For his part, the Colombian team will compete in the round of 16, in the individual modality, next Sunday, August 4, from 4:01 am.
