The group stage of the Olympic Games is over. The selections have gone from theory to practice. Big disappointments like France, Germany or Argentina have been left out. There have also been surprises like New Zealand or Egypt. First screening, only eight of the 16 initial selections have passed.
This is the ranking Tokyo 2020 favorites:
New Zealanders are in a cloud. The agonizing victory achieved against South Korea and the draw against Romania has allowed them to advance to the quarterfinals despite the defeat against Honduras. They will play against Japan and are the Cinderella of the quarterfinals.
Egypt is another one of the surprises of the quarterfinals. The intensity and the claw of the North Africans has been key in the passage to the quarterfinals. They got a tough draw against Spain and a victory against Australia. They finished tied on points against Argentina, but have gone through goal difference.
Ivory Coast have played their cards well in the group stage. The Ivorians drew against Brazil and Germany and beat Saudi Arabia. Spain awaits them in the quarterfinals.
South Korea has swept the group stage, although they fell against revolutionary New Zealand. The South Koreans have scored 10 goals in three games and are coming strong. They will try to make things difficult for Mexico.
Japan plays at home and this gives them a plus of favoritism. The Japanese have won all three of their group stage matches and will also face New Zealand in the quarterfinals. The team led by Kubo dreams of the football medal.
Mexico did their homework and reached the quarterfinals, despite losing to Japan in the group stage. They have eliminated France and South Africa. The tri plays happy, with gunpowder in the final meters.
The situation of Spain in Tokyo 2020 is very similar to that of Euro 2020. La Roja combines, dominates and arrives, but does not define in the final meters. If the ball starts to enter, they are favorites alongside Brazil.
Brazil have won two games and drawn one in the group stage. The experience of Dani Alves, the goal of Richarlison and jewels like Reinier agglomerate the hopes of the canarinha. They defend the gold obtained in Rio.
