Finland According to a report commissioned by the Board of the Olympic Committee, the principles of transparency, visibility and continuous dialogue have not been observed in the selection of the head of the Top Sports Unit for the next term. The study was carried out by BDO Oy, which provides financial and other expert services to companies, and presented the study at an extraordinary meeting of the Olympic Committee held in Helsinki on Tuesday evening, which was open to the media.

The investigation relates to a tangle that was revealed at the turn of March-April and led to the then head of the Top Sports Unit Mika Lehtimäki get rid of.

In the autumn, Lehtimäki received a warning about inappropriate behavior. Information on the warning was restricted to the Presidium of the Board of the Olympic Committee, which includes the Chairman Jan Vapaavuori and the Vice-Chairs Susanna Rahkamo and Sari Multala. Also CEO Mikko Salonen knew about it.

Lehtimäki was elected at the beginning of March for a further term until 2024. At the end of March, Yle reported on the warning, and Lehtimäki later resigned.

According to the report, the Board’s draft resolutions should be prepared in good time and the background information should be comprehensively described. The Board did not have all the information needed to make a decision when Lehtimäki’s extension agreement was decided.

“The recommendations for action are relevant. Everything will be implemented,” Vapaavuori said at an extraordinary meeting in Helsinki on Tuesday evening.

“I thought it was important that the report was made and that the matter was combed through carefully.”

Behind the extraordinary meeting was a request from the Badminton Association in early April, which included 15 other member organizations.

The Olympic Committee has a total of 90 full member organizations and 30 partner members.
