There are some interesting changes inside the Switch OLED.
The biggest and most obvious difference between the original Nintendo Switch and the new OLED switch is the display, but there are also some changes inside the console. iFixit has opened one of the latest models, discovering redesigned printed circuit boards, modified cooling and no longer modular storage space inside.
Aside from the display, the Switch OLED’s exterior sports some new design features. There’s the console-level kickstand, redesigned speakers, less curved cartridge slot, and more stable Joy-con rails. All of these new exterior bits mean that even inside the Switch OLED there had to be changes. IFixit’s team of “tech teardown” experts have discovered several changes.
In the image below you can see the original Switch heatsink and fan on the left, with the newer and smaller versions on the right. The cooling system has shrunk, which iFixit says is a move to save space or reduce what was called the “cooling overcompensation“of previous models.
You can also see the SD card reader, headphone jack and game card reader, previously on two separate cards, which have now been grouped into one piece.
The Switch OLED’s new speakers, at the bottom of the image below, have been encased to allow for better sound in a smaller space.
Perhaps the most disappointing change within the Switch OLED is internal storage. In the original Switch, the 32GB internal storage unit was modular, which gave it the option to upgrade. The Switch OLED’s larger 64GB storage drive is now part of the motherboard.
How about?
