The Brazilian writer Olavo de Carvalho, ideological guru of Bolsonarism, has died this Tuesday at the age of 74, according to his family. His relatives have not disclosed the cause of death, but one of his daughters, with whom he had public friction, has stated that it was due to covid. A few days ago he had tested positive. The also professor of philosophy and emblem of the Brazilian radical right inspired by Trumpism, which at times minimized the severity of the pandemic, died in a hospital in Richmond (Virginia, USA), where he lived for decades.
A former leftist turned anti-communist with age, De Carvalho whispered to Jair Bolsonaro from his time as a presidential candidate as an anti-system candidate. Steve Bannon, the political strategist after Donald Trump’s victory, was one of his great inspirations. The writer intended to give ideological packaging to the crusade of the Bolsonaro clan and its followers against what they call globalism, cultural Marxism, feminism…
Bolsonaro, from whom he moved away in recent times although without breaking with him, has fired him on networks “as one of the greatest thinkers in history” in Brazil. “Olavo was a giant in the fight for freedom and a beacon for millions of Brazilians,” added the national-populist leader.
– He leaves us a review of two of the greatest thinkers in the history of our country, the Philosopher and Professor Olavo Luiz Pimentel de Carvalho.
– Olavo was a giant in the struggle for freedom and a lantern for thousands of Brazilians. His example and his teachings will mark us forever.

De Carvalho was a substantial ingredient in Bolsonaro’s electoral campaign. And once he came to power by winning the elections in 2018, the writer’s influence was enormous at the beginning of the mandate. In his first direct on Facebook as president of the republic, Bolsonaro appeared with the Constitution, a Bible and a book from the Philosophy professor. He placed two ministers in the Cabinet, those of Foreign Relations and Education, and became the leader of the ideological wing of the Government, a sector whose power was diminishing as Bolsonaro was losing popularity and needed broader parliamentary support.
Simultaneously, de Carvalho’s discontent with the president grew. In 2020 he accused him of “adapting to the system”. More recently, he expressed his disappointment and went so far as to affirm on social media that he would vote for Bolsonaro in the 2022 elections, but due to a lack of alternatives. He considered that the president had abandoned the war against communism. And the truth is that the president has softened his ideological profile to surrender into the arms of the parties of the old politics in exchange for parliamentary support to stay in power and contest the elections in October. His opponent will probably be Lula da Silva.
