Their salary will exceed 2,620 euros on average in 2024 and they could add an extra 550 euros if they finally pay that 1.5% variable increase
Unlike workers in the private sector, the more than three million public employees already know what the salary increases they will have in the next two years and for which they will receive more than 200 euros more per month on average in 2024. increase of 2% that had been applied to their payroll this year will be added another 1.5% additional to compensate them, although only minimally, for the escalation of inflation, according to the agreement reached by the Government with CGT and CC Or and that CSIF has rejected because it considers that it is another “rejonazo” for this group.
Thanks to this new revaluation, at the end of this year they will receive a payment of almost 520 euros on average. This amount is the result of applying that 1.5% increase to the average salary of civil servants, which stands at 34,616.4 euros gross per year, according to the INE with data extracted from the corresponding Active Population Survey (EPA). to 2022, latest available year.
In any case, this group, which was one of the hardest hit during the 2008 crisis, will again lose purchasing power this year, more than 5 points, which is added to the strong deterioration they have suffered in the last decade due to the cuts that suffered in the Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero and the salary freeze that they maintained for five years, so they will have almost 20 points less purchasing power.
The keys
-
9.5%
The income of civil servants will rise between 2022 and 2024, although 1.5% is a variable increase that depends on the evolution of the GDP and the CPI. -
34,616
It is the gross annual salary that public employees receive on average, according to the INE, which is almost 2,500 euros per month in 14 payments. -
1,066
more euros per month are earned by workers in the public sector compared to those in the private sector, which represents a gap of almost 37%, higher than the gender gap.
But January will start with another 2.5% rise in civil servant payrolls. It will mean an extra of about 75 euros per month on average, with which his remuneration will rise to exceed 35,800 euros gross euros in 2023, which divided into 14 payments would imply 2,560 euros per month.
The last increase that the Government has agreed with two of the large unions is to raise the salaries of public employees by 2% in 2024. They will thus be 61 euros more per month and their monthly remuneration will climb to 2,623 euros, 36,723 euros gross per year.
An extra 1% almost guaranteed
These are the fixed increases that have been established for the 2022-2024 period. But, as in the previous Civil Service agreement signed in 2018, there will be an additional percentage increase that will be applied if certain conditions are met, which depend on the evolution of GDP and inflation. Thus, if the sum of the harmonized CPI for 2022 and the advanced harmonized CPI for September 2023 exceeds 6%, public workers would receive an additional 0.5%, which would represent a payment of around 180 euros.
This plus is practically guaranteed, since this year’s harmonized inflation would already stand at 8.7%, according to the Bank of Spain’s estimate, and in 2024 it will be 5.6%.
Gap of 1,000 euros
More difficult to achieve is the 0.5% premium that they would receive if the nominal GDP equals or exceeds 5.9%, which is the estimate handled by the Government and also the body led by Pablo Hernández de Cos. However, a sharp slowdown in the economy is expected next year, which is why CSIF considers it to be a “very optimistic” forecast, although much will depend on inflation continuing at high levels. If fulfilled, the group would receive another 180 euros at the end of the year that would also be consolidated in their payroll.
Finally, there will be another 0.5% in 2024 if the CPI accumulated between 2022 and 2024 exceeds 8%, a condition that is also more than likely to be met even with this year’s data alone. If all the premiums were finally paid, with that additional 1.5% the remuneration of public employees would rise by more than 550 euros and would exceed 37,000 euros gross per year.
These new increases will foreseeably increase the strong gap that already exists between workers in the public and private sectors, the highest in recent times, which is not much talked about but which is much more significant than the gender gap: almost 37%. In other words, civil servants earn 37% more than company employees, a difference of more than 1,000 euros per month. Or if you turn around: wage earners in the private sector earn 58% less than those in the public sector.
