Sergio Perez was already told on the radio during the closing phase of the race that he might receive a penalty. He is instructed by the team to do everything possible to drive enough distance between him and Leclerc. If there is enough time between him and Leclerc, he can take a possible time penalty.
Perez would not have kept enough distance from the safety car. This distance should be ten car lengths. He is then subject to a penalty of 5 or 10 seconds. He finished 7.5 seconds ahead of Leclerc and 15 seconds ahead of Sainz. With a penalty of 5 seconds, there would be nothing to worry about.
Perez gets penalty, but keeps victory in Singapore
Red Bull’s strategy is proving successful. The FIA does indeed give Perez a five-second penalty for the safety car incident, meaning he still finishes 2.5 seconds ahead of Leclerc. Sergio Perez thus remains the winner of the Singapore GP in 2022.
