In the final moments of qualifying for the Qatar Grand Prix, the exposure of the yellow flags following the accident that happened to Pierre Gasly of the Alpha Tauri and the consequent behavior of the drivers in the last sector of the track. In particular, the conduct of Max Verstappen it was analyzed by the Commissioners, who called him this morning at 11 am Italian to discuss what happened in the excited final moments, which saw the Dutchman improve his lap time, confirming himself as second.
From the images of the camera car of his Red Bull it can be seen that Verstappen did not encounter the luminous panels with the yellow light on his way (nor an identical indication on the steering wheel), but white – signaling a slow car on the track -, but he crossed a trackside marshal on his route who manually displayed the double yellow flag. Faced with the signal, the telemetry made it clear that the number 33 car was not slowing down.
The Federation has communicated the decision of penalize the championship leader by five positions on the grid, which therefore will start from seventh place, given that from the press release it is clear that the conduct of Carlos Sainz has instead satisfied the commissioners. “The driver acknowledged that he was aware of Gasly’s car on the right hand side. In such circumstances it is reasonable to expect, as Sainz’s car did, that there is potential danger and that therefore there was probably a yellow flag situation, with all appropriate actions to be decided accordingly“. The statement also mentions the case-Hamilton in Austria in 2020: “In that circumstance there were three positions, which is the usual penalty for a single yellow flag situation, while the penalty for car number 5 (Vettel, ed) in Bahrain in 2021 it was five positions, which is the usual one for a double yellow flag situation“.
