Activists of the LGBTTTIQ+ community gathered this afternoon at the facilities of the Infonavit Workers Union of Mexico City (CDMX)to demand justice after an act of discrimination.
Outrage arose after the union leader, Rafael Riva Palacio Pontones, will incite his members to dismantle banners of the LGBTIQ+ flag at the general offices of the Institute of the National Housing Fund for Workers (Infonavit), yesterday.
The case has generated condemnations and statements, including one from CONAPRED, and the complaint from the General Director of Infonavit, Carlos Martínez Velázquez, who described the act as homophobic and discriminatory.
Demonstration and night riots
A day after the incident, a group of Activists gathered outside the National Union of Infonavit Workers to protest against homophobia evidenced by the union leader.
The demonstration included riots, entry into facilities and material damage such as the destruction of glass doors and burning of an armchair as a sign of rejection of the discriminatory act.
The demonstration, called by organizations such as “Queereme mucho”, “House of Magdalena” and “RacismoMX”, seeks to remind the union of the importance of inclusion and respect for all diversities. Activists demand that Infonavit be an inclusive institution that respects the rights of the LGBTTTIQ+ community.
Rafael Riva Palacio Pontones issued a statement justifying the removal of the LGBT banners as a measure to preserve the heritage of Infonavit. He argued that the placement of the banners was an act of publicity that was not justified on the façade of the building, which is the institution’s heritage.
