Moon, mission accomplished. Odysseus' moon landing (with some shivers)
The return of man to the Moon after more than half a century it is one step away. There spaceship American Odysseus, Odie or IM-1, arrived on lunar soil. However, it is not yet clear what conditions she is in: the first signal that she sent to the headquarters of the private company Intuitive Machines who designed it and sent it into space with funding from NASA, it arrived late and weak. The engineers who managed the flight and moon landing they faced significant navigation problems and mission control had difficulty communicating with the aircraft after its arrival. But after a few attempts with multiple antennas from Earth, the beep finally came from the lander. “We can confirm without a doubt that our vehicle is on the surface of the Moon and that we are transmitting,” said flight director Tim. Odysseus, the private lander of the Texas company Intuitive Machine, has landed on the Moon.
Launched on February 15th, Odysseus entered lunar orbit on February 21 after traveling one million kilometers. The Im-1 mission thus achieved its objective. Before the success of Odysseus there had been the failures of Peregrine and Hakuto-R M1. The countries that have managed to land one of their vehicles on the moon are USA, Russia, China, India and Japan. “Odysseus has a new home,” Intuitive Machine wrote on X. The moon landing took place near the Malapert A crater, about 300 kilometers from the lunar south pole.
The crater has a diameter of approximately 69 kilometers and is near the Malapert massif, one of 13 sites considered for NASA's Artemis III mission. Odysseus is partly financed by the program launched in 2018 by NASA for commercial flights, the Commercial Lunar Payload Services. It has six NASA instruments on board whose objective is to collect data useful for planning future missions of the Artemis program, intended and put astronauts on the Moon again.
