The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said yesterday, Thursday, that more than 5 million people in 16 countries in West and Central Africa have been affected by floods so far this year.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that floods in West and Central Africa had reached catastrophic levels, with Chad, Niger and Nigeria among the most affected countries.
The office said that more than a thousand people died, at least 740,000 people were displaced, hundreds of thousands of homes, more than 100 schools, and dozens of health facilities were damaged, and nearly 500,000 acres of agricultural land were affected.
The agency added that Joyce Misoya, interim emergency relief coordinator, announced the allocation of $35 million from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund to provide flood relief in Chad, Niger, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Congo.
