After the stoppage of the pandemic, this revision has been recovered in the Technical Inspection of Vehicles
The OBD (On Board Diagnostics) test, translated as the on-board diagnostic system, is one of the revisions that were recovered this year in the Vehicle Technical Inspection (ITV). His return came on July 1 after it was suspended due to the pandemic, since due to restrictions the technician was not allowed to access the interior.
What is OBD and what does the test consist of
The OBD test consists of a diagnosis that is carried out through an examination of the car’s central computer. It is verified that the vehicle does not exceed the emission limits and that it has not been tampered with. Thanks to this device, the mileage, the ABS, the electronic stability system and the operation of airbags and lights are verified.
Specifically, OBD is a system that is built into cars to detect faults and control emissions. This technology was born with the aim of checking the rate of polluting emissions. An aspect that is carefully monitored to reduce the environmental impact of the gases they emit. With the intention of improving the state of the air in large cities, several measures have already been implemented in Spain, such as environmental labels or Low Emission Zones. Therefore, it is a very important ITV test and with it now it is also sought to put an end to the manipulation of security and emission control systems.
who are obliged
This is a very comprehensive test that not all cars have to pass. The OBD became mandatory in 2018 with the entry into force of the new regulations regarding ITV. After the break in 2020, vehicles in categories M and N approved for Euro 5 and Euro 6 emissions, registered as of January 1, 2011, and trucks for Euro VI registered from January 1, 2014. This is stated in the Inspection Procedure Manual for ITV Stations.
