Nvidia and Amazon have announced a significant financial commitment to support a partnership between the University of Tsukuba, Japan, and the University of Washington in the United States. The collaboration, worth $110 million, will have as its main focus different aspects of artificial intelligence, opening new research perspectives in key sectors such as robotics, healthcare, climate change and atmospheric sciences.
The two technology companies will each contribute $25 million to fund the universities' AI research, which will focus on designing innovative solutions to global challenges. Nvidia highlighted that this support comes at a critical time, when universities around the world are preparing to address critical AI skills by offering access to the high-performance computing capabilities of supercomputers.
The company also highlighted that this funding adds to its recent collaboration with the Japan National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, regarding AI and quantum technology, reiterating that partnerships between companies and universities are a key tool to address the shortage of skilled AI personnel.
In the statement from the University of Tsukuba, President Nagata Kyosuke highlighted that this new partnership will strengthen existing semiconductor research in the United States and Japan, opening up new opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Amazon noted that the partnership will last ten years and expands a “close collaboration with Nvidia” that has lasted 13 years, underlining the two companies' long-term commitment to driving innovation and technological development.
The president of the University of Washington, Tricia Serio, in her statement, emphasized that the institution has obtained “an extraordinary opportunity” to “lead the global conversation on AI and convene academic researchers, industry experts and government leaders” , underscoring the importance of this collaboration for advancing AI research and development.
