A report by the US House of Representatives Judiciary Committee shows that the Joe Biden administration’s negligent immigration policy was responsible for the significant increase in the number of unaccompanied minors entering the country irregularly.
According to data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), last year, around 137,275 children entered the US alone, 100,000 more than was recorded in 2020.
The Chamber document details that the main audience in this category is teenagers. Almost 70% of minors are 15 years old or over and 61% are men.
According to the director responsible for refugee management, Robin Dunn Marcos, there are no government measures to check these people who enter the country illegally for criminal records.
Last year, Marcos told the committee that unaccompanied minors are not screened at all and that the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) lacks facilities designed to hold people with prior records.
The director was also unaware of any action by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to determine whether an unaccompanied minor has a criminal record in the U.S. and confirmed that HHS does not request criminal records from countries of origin.
