The number of deaths due to the strong storm that hit Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, reached 197, according to the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department. The heaviest rain was on February 15th and caused floods and landslides in several parts of the municipality. Since then, the city has suffered from bad weather.
The forecast for today (23), according to the National Institute of Meteorology, is for new showers in the region.
The firefighters continue, day and night, with search and rescue work, since the 15th, according to information from the corporation. Twenty-four people were rescued alive in the first hours of the disaster.
Civil Police and the State Public Ministry are also continuing the work of identifying and releasing bodies, in addition to the search for missing persons. Until yesterday, more than 800 people were sheltered in schools in Petrópolis.
