Nuclear power TVO: Olkiluoto 3’s electricity production will not start until March – security systems are being tested

The start date was also postponed earlier this month.

Olkiluoto 3 The start of electricity production will be delayed from a previously announced date, says Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) in a press release. Electricity production was last reported to start this month. Now, however, TVO has announced that electricity production will begin next month and regular electricity distribution in July, according to updated data.

According to TVO, the automation change needs identified during the trial operation phase of Olkiluoto 3, especially those related to the control functions of the turbine plant, and their additional testing will take longer than previously estimated, as a result of which the schedule has now been updated. The plant unit and its safety systems will be tested and the plant’s planned behavior will be further ensured, TVO says.

Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) reported earlier that two reactor shutdowns occurred in January in connection with the commissioning tests of the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant’s third reactor.

According to STUK, the significance of the events for safety was so insignificant that they could not even be placed on the safety scale of nuclear facility events.

The first time the emergency shutdown took place was on 14 January and the second time on 29 January. At the beginning of February, Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) announced that the start of OL3’s electricity production would be delayed. Electricity production was scheduled to start as early as the end of January, but the start was postponed to that month.

So now the start date has been postponed to March. The exact date will not be stated in the bulletin. However, TVO also says that it will also publish a stock exchange release if the schedule for the trial period changes more than three weeks earlier than announced.
