According to the New York Times, US President Joe Biden has agreed to send additional military aid to Ukraine worth $800 million, as part of a total support package he agreed to earlier, amounting to $14 billion.
Last Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke to the US Congress by video link and asked members of the US legislature to provide more support to Ukraine over what he described as the “brutal Russian war.”
The expert in military affairs and nuclear weapons, Tom Colina, believes that the United States has a duty, and can, indeed, provide assistance to Ukraine, such as increasing humanitarian support, in parallel with imposing severe sanctions on Russia, but the American action regarding this crisis should stop at certain limits.
The researcher added that the increased US intervention in the Ukraine crisis increases the possibility of a confrontation between Russia on the one hand, and NATO on the other, and this matter will have catastrophic consequences, if it occurs.
And earlier this March, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that nuclear war, which was completely out of the question, has become within the scope of the possibility.
A step towards nuclear war
The military expert wrote that if Biden acquiesced to the demands to impose a no-fly zone in Ukraine’s airspace, in order to restrain the Russians, this would be a step toward nuclear war.
The American researcher, who has authored several books and research on nuclear weapons, indicated that Biden is a man from the Cold War era, and he knows that the Soviet Union is over, but its arsenal is still present, and the same applies to the United States.
He added that any nuclear war would lead to a large number of direct deaths, in addition to environmental destruction, famine and very harmful radiation, meaning the end of civilization “as we used to.”
The researcher stressed that Biden is aware of these dangers, and for this reason, he made it clear on the eleventh of this March, that Washington is aware of the danger, and therefore, it will not go to war against Russia in Ukraine, because confrontation means the outbreak of a third world war, “which is something we should seek to avoid.” .
The writer described Biden’s position as “wise”, because he not only refused to establish a no-fly zone over Ukraine, but also rejected a Polish offer of MiG fighter jets to Ukraine.
The expert suggests that the United States should move forward in helping the Ukrainian people, in parallel with providing military aid to Ukraine so that it would be an obstacle to the achievement of the Russian mission in the country.
He stated that when the Russians face difficulty in their operations, as a result of American support, they will likely be more flexible in negotiating a settlement, as long as the status quo on the ground draws the most prominent lines of political solutions.
