DIn view of his foot problems, Germany’s basketball legend Dirk Nowitzki is concerned whether he shouldn’t have ended his career in the NBA earlier.
“Would you have had to play the last two years? Maybe my foot would be a bit better now, I could kick with the kids, that’s just not possible anymore,” said the 43-year-old in the podcast “Einfach mal Luppen” by former soccer world champion Toni Kroos and his brother Felix. From 1999 to 2019, the Würzburg player played for the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA and won the championship with the Texans in 2011.
“My foot is really bad”
After more than 21 years of high-performance sport, Nowitzki, who still lives in Dallas with his wife Jessica and their three children, has massive problems with his left ankle, which has already had to be operated on.
“My foot is really bad, there are days when I don’t move well at all. I wonder, have the last two years really been worth it? We haven’t achieved anything as a team, that’s going through my head a bit,” said Nowitzki. But it is also “damn” difficult to find the right time to end your career.
He plays tennis a few times a week, mostly in doubles. “It’s fun to stand at the back of the baseline and thunder a few balls forward,” said Nowitzki: “But unfortunately I can’t move much anymore.”
