Serena Bortone in the controversy after the gesture of which she became the protagonist: what happened
On Saturday a great controversy broke out over Rai's censorship of the monologue written by Antonio Scurati on the occasion of April 25th, which should have been broadcast in the program What will be conducted by Serena Bortone on Rai3. The show's share skyrocketed, recording 4.9%. The affair generated significant political reactions, with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni speaking of the case as a situation of chaos in the majority and in Viale Mazzini.
According to what was declared by the CEO of Rai, Roberto Sergio, no one informed him of the decision to block Scurati's speech and he learned of the affair through a post on social media by presenter Serena Bortone. Sergio stated that he would broadcast the monologue and would evaluate possible rebalancing measures to ensure a level playing field. The question remains how this is possible: how does a manager not know the decisions of his subordinates?
The reactions to the censorship were not long in coming, with the journalists' union speaking of an increasingly suffocating control over information and a violation of the principles of journalistic work:
“Dear viewers, we dissociate ourselves from company decisions and fight for an independent, balanced and plural public service.”
The assembly of Rai editorial committees proclaimed a state of unrest and approved 5 days of strike in protest against the company's decisions. The debate on the actions of the Rai management in this period is very heated: many of the faces of the broadcaster are leaving the studios in Via Mazzini, configuring the schedule and the television offer in a totally revolutionary way.
The response came from the company which denied any control over information and any censorship, underlining the commitment to improving the industrial and economic structure and protecting the tradition of the Public Service. However, there has also been speculation that there might be disciplinary measures against Serena Bortone for having read the censored text during the broadcast.
The affair has divided public opinion and raised questions about freedom of expression and the independence of information in public service broadcasting. Further developments are awaited on the issue and on the possible consequences for the protagonists involved: perhaps the closure of the program in June. In this historical moment, however, perhaps punitive actions will bring many more advantages than negative sides to Bortone.
