The traffic problems on the A-5 began this Monday with the occupation of 300 meters of the right lane of the northern carriageway in order to expand a 200-meter section to provide it with greater capacity, due to the works on the Paseo Verde del Suroeste. , whose first phase began on October 11.
The objective is divert traffic from the south road (entrance direction to Madrid) to the north road (exit direction). This was announced this Sunday by the delegate of Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility of the Madrid City Council, Borja Carabante, in a message through X (formerly Twitter), in which he specified that “the work will last three weeks.”
The right lane of Paseo de Extremadura will be occupied, which runs from the first intersection of Calle Dante with Paseo de Extremadura to number 200 Paseo de Extremadura. The demolition of the sidewalk will take place from the second intersection of Dante Street with the Paseo de Extremadura to number 196 (200 meters).
The outer lane will occupy 300 meters and will pass through El Greco street, parallel to the A-5. Thus, the four lanes can be provisionally transformed into two exit lanes and two entry lanes with a concrete barrier to separate the two directions.
From 00:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on November 18, the lane will be cut with yellow paint, signaling and beacons. The work will entail the transfer of various elements of street furniture, signage and lighting and a temporary bus stop will be set up to replace number 881, just ten meters from the current one.
While these demolition works last, it will be enabled an alternative pedestrian route through Dante, El Greco and Villamanín streetswhich will also give access to the aforementioned stop.
Almeida’s star work
These works are included in the project to bury the A-5 or Southwestern highway, through which 80,000 vehicles pass daily and whose works began on October 11 in its first phase.
The objective is to transform the highway into a large green walk composed of seven nodes of green areas that will connect the Latina district from north to south, from the Campamento neighborhood to the current Avenida de Portugal and the area around Puerta del Ángel. Thus, vehicles on the surface will be reduced by 90% and also polluting emissions.
The coverage of the A-5 will allow continuity to the pedestrianized boulevard of Avenida de Portugal, which connects with Madrid Río, to Avenida del Padre Piquer: a burial that will affect more than three kilometers.
The work is divided into two phasesthe one that goes to Padre Piquer Street, which is fully financed by the City Council, of 408 million euros, and the one that will go further and will go through the Campamento operation, which consists of a budget of 400 million euros, of which the The State will contribute 150. There will be a total of 800 million euros.
‘Soft’ mobility will be promoted thanks to the construction of a three-kilometre two-way trafficked cycle lanewhich will begin on Illescas Street and connect with the existing one on Portugal Avenue, thus linking with Madrid Río. In this way, the use of this means of transport to access the center will be promoted. On the surface, there will be wider sidewalks and 28 new pedestrian connections compared to the current ten, favoring foot traffic.
Public transport
Due to the effects that the works will generate as a whole, the Madrid City Council, together with the regional Government, contemplates a reinforcement of 7.3% of EMT lines directly affected by the works: Line 36 Atocha-Campamento, Line 39 Plaza de España-San Ignacio and Line 65 Benavente-Gran Capitán.
The alternative lines to the A-5 axis will also be reinforced: Line 17 Plaza Mayor-Parque Europa, Line 34 Cibeles-Las Águilas and Line 138 Cristo Rey-San Ignacio.
To this is added the improvement of the frequency of the ML3 Light Metro line (coming from Boadilla del Monte) and the creation of two load break points on interurban lines to avoid the foreseeable impact on mobility.
