Oslo – The Norwegian government fears a full-scale invasion of Ukraine following Russia’s recognition of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk. What is now happening in eastern Ukraine could lead to bigger steps, said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store at a press conference in Oslo on Tuesday. There is at least reason to believe that the Russian mindset is about weakening Ukraine as a state and possibly going further with a full-scale invasion of the country. The situation in Europe is serious.
Norway borders Russia in the far north. The Scandinavian non-EU country is a NATO member, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg is Norwegian and was previously the long-standing Norwegian Prime Minister. Støre was Stoltenberg’s foreign minister for almost seven years during this period.
Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the independence of the separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine on Monday evening. He also ordered Russian soldiers to be sent to eastern Ukraine, marking the second time since 2014 that he was planning to invade Ukraine. The West accuses him of violating international law. According to Western sources, Russia has gathered around 150,000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine. (dpa)
