The largest audience in Netflix’s history with more than 111 million viewers, the South Korean series Round 6 (Squid Game in the original title) generated comments in neighboring North Korea.
A North Korean website praised the production and says it shows that “corruption and immoral scoundrels are common in the country.” Another comment was that the production portrays the “sad reality of the bestial South Korean society”.

In 2020, the production “Parasite”, winner of the Oscar for best film, had already been the target of comments. At the time it was called a masterpiece that shows the divide between rich and poor in South Korea.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has also called south-produced soap operas “perverse cancer” and banned these productions and K-pop songs in the country.
