North Korea is no longer the overwhelming team of the first few days. It is logical, the World Cup’s demands increase as the stages progress. But yesterday they overcame everything and last night they were waiting for their opponent.
In the 22nd minute, the North Koreans, two-time world champions in the category (2006 and 2016), found the advantage in one of their great virtues, advancing in the opponent’s field with quick, first-time touches, which ended with a left-footed shot by Choe Il-Son, which entered at ground level, close to the left hand post of the American goalkeeper, Teagan Wy.
The first half could have ended with a much bigger score in favour of the Asians. Poor aim and one or two fantastic attempts at goal that did not work prevented it. But in the second half, the Koreans were running out of gas. Fatigue was evident and, incredibly, coach Ri Song-Ho did not refresh the team and only came to order three substitutions in the 90th minute. The hydration break in the second half was welcomed as a blessing.
The Americans were on top of the opposition, but North Korea showed off another of its virtues: a quick retreat and a compact block that its rivals could not break.
North Korea is no coincidence. They have been working well in the lower categories for some time now. Apart from the two world crowns, they were runners-up in 2008, semi-finalists in 2014 and reached the quarter-finals on three other occasions (2012, 2012 and 2018).
