North Korea has deployed medical teams to the southwestern province of Hwanghae in an effort to curb the spread of a contagious gastro-intestinal disease, state media reported Sunday.
Last Thursday, the Korean Central News Agency reported that an “acute intestinal epidemic” had occurred in Heeju, South Hwanghae Province, a little more than a month after the official confirmation of the first outbreak of COVID-19 in the country.
On Sunday, the agency said several medical teams have been deployed to southern Hwanghae to “intensify medical examinations of all citizens” and identify all patients suffering from the disease. The teams are also tasked with providing special care for children, the elderly and people with chronic diseases.
Pyongyang said sanitation and garbage disposal work was under way and drinking water was being checked for safety.
The nature of the disease is not yet clear, and observers have not ruled out the possibility of an outbreak of typhoid or cholera in the largely isolated country. On Friday, the Korean Central News Agency reported that more than 800 families have been affected by the new outbreak.
And last May, North Korea officially announced for the first time since the outbreak of the Corona pandemic that it had recorded cases of Covid-19.
