SEUL (Reuters) – North Korea has announced that it has launched a test launch of a new ballistic missile from a submarine, state media reported on Wednesday 20 (local time), the day after authorities in Korea. South and Japan detected what appeared to be a weapons test.
The South Korean Army said on Tuesday that it believes North Korea has launched a submarine ballistic missile (SLBM) from its coastline, the latest in a series of North Korean missile tests.

The new type of SLBM was launched from the same submarine involved in a test of an older SLBM in 2016, according to North Korea’s state news agency KCNA.
Analysts noted that the photos released by KCNA appeared to show a missile thinner than previous SLBMs, meaning that more missiles – but with a shorter range – could be stored in a single submarine, potentially bringing North Korea closer to have an operational submarine with ballistic missiles.
“The new type of SLBM, in which many advanced control technologies, including flank mobility and glide and jump mobility are introduced, will significantly contribute to bringing the country’s defense technology to a high level and to increasing capacity underwater operation of our navy,” KCNA said.
The presence of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was not reported in the test. The missile was launched from the sea in the Sinpo region, where North Korea maintains submarines and equipment to test SLBM launches, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.
